This (misguided) school assignment turns a household scanner – a cold, mindless tool of capture – into the site of an impossible negotiation between flesh and machine. The hand, with fingers stretched or palm hollowed, skims the surface, tracing failed circles. Biological interferences, skin residues, halos of sweat, and the stutter of movement fossilize human faltering. Digitals archives the search for a form both primal and artificial, through a gesture both empirical and flesh-bound. These ghosts underscore our vulnerability before a tool that always tells the truth, one to which we surrender our habits.
